This 4 month residency has been overall, a great experience.  Firstly I want to say how much I have loved being in Lowestoft.  It is a town with many wonderful features, the architecture, the beaches, but most of all the friendliness and warmth of the residents.
Working for 3 days a week in the Crown/Windsor and Newton Brush Factory has been a treat beyond measure.  Not only have Liz and I been totally welcomed by everyone and become part of it's everyday existence (albeit for only 4 months) but we have been able to appreciate how these individually hand-crafted brushes are made.  Some of the brush makers have been with the factory for up to 40*years.  This is such an unusual phenomenon within this fast moving, money orientated world where the working culture it to change and be expected to change jobs many times in order to get on in the working world.
1.      Below is the first painting I began.  Allowing the initial marks made with Raw Umber, Liquidex Acrylic and using a large brush and lots of water I threw paint over 2 large pieces of cardboard.  From these marks images emerge and the memories are recalled from my subconscious.  In this case it was immediately thoughts of the books of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter came to mind.  I can't tell you why this happens but it does and I enjoy working that way.  I tend to go along with whatever I can see and the storyline may become more understood by me at a later date.  I do not try to manipulate my thoughts to change the image - not in the beginning anyway.

2.  The image is now becoming clearer to me.  There are rabbits.  The big one is angry.  I thought of Peter Rabbit stealing vegetables from Mr McGregor's garden.  I named (maybe temporarily) "The Scolding of Peter Rabbit".
